Background
•The Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) administers
several grant programs including the Selective
Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).
•The STEP grant period is October 1st through
September 30th.
•The Menifee Police Department applied for the grant
in January of this year. Traffic statistics from 2017,
2018, and 2019 were used in the grant application.
•The Police Department was awarded $115,000
•The grant funds will be available on October
1, 2020
Grant Award
•To reduce the number of persons killed and
injured in crashes involving alcohol and other
primary collision factors.
Grant Goal
•Send 4 officers to Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) POST certified training
•Send 2 officers through Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) POST certified training
•Send 1 officer to Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Training
•Send 1 officer to DRE recertification training
•Send 1 officer to SFST Instructor training
Grant Objectives (Training)
•Conduct 5 DUI checkpoints
•Conduct 9 DUI Saturation Patrols
•Conduct 4 traffic enforcement operations
targeting cell phone violations
•Conduct 2 motorcycle safety enforcement
operations
•Conduct 1 nighttime Click It or Ticket operation
•Conduct 4 pedestrian/bicycle safety operations
Grant Objectives (Enforcement)
Grant Equipment Purchases
•Purchase a DUI Trailer $35,000
•Purchase DUI checkpoint supplies $312
•Purchase 5 PAS devices $2,500
•Purchase 2 Lidar devices $3,690
•Total $41,502
Fiscal Impact
•There is no fiscal impact to the general fund.
OTS will reimburse any fiscal costs within the
guidelines of this grant to the designated fund.
No match by the City is required.
