Meeting Minutes
March 10, 2015
1. Call to order and roll call
Committee Chairman John Denver called the meeting to order at 3:02 p.m.
Present were: Chairman John Denver, Committee member Greg August, Senior
Management Analyst Gina Gonzalez, Assistant Director of Public Works Rafael
Martinez, Building Official Colin McNie, Deputy City Clerk Jennifer Allen, Lt. Charles
Guillen, and Animal Control Officer Middleton.
2. Public Comments
None.
3. Minutes — February 10, 2015
Approved as presented.
4. Activity Reports/Status Updates Police Department
Lieutenant Guillen covered the latest Police stats with the committee. He reported on the
costs involved with hiring the various positions of officers and the costs for outfitting a
motorbike. Committee Member August asked about the laws for enforcement of
marijuana cultivation. Lt. Guillen stated that the laws and regulations are being reviewed
and the Police Department will enforce the laws that are enacted. Chairman Denver
asked that Captain Judge prepare a report regarding the budget to hire more police
officers and present it at the Legacy Workshop.
5. Activity Reports/Status Updates Fire Department
None.
6. Activity Reports/Status Updates Code Enforcement
Director of Code Enforcement McNie reported on the Code Enforcement stats for the
month of February. He noted Code Enforcement has increased their proactive activity
level. Committee Member August expressed concerns regarding the increased fines and
forfeitures that will come from the proactive activity. Following discussion, Chairman
Denver stated that the Public Safety Committee will continue to review the Code
Enforcement reports. Chairman Denver stated that he would like an increase in public
safety officers.
7. Activity Reports/Status Updates Emergency Services
None.
8. Activity Reports/Status Updates from Animal Control Providers
a. County of Riverside Sheltering Services — not able to attend the meeting.
b. Animal Friends of the Valleys Animal Control Services
Officer Middleton reported on Animal Control statistics for the month of February.
She noted that the microchip clinic conducted a couple years ago was successful
as the animals found are being returned to their owners due to the microchip.
Chairman Denver asked that another microchip clinic be looked into with a report
back. Officer Middleton noted she will contact Petco and report back. Committee
Member August inquired about adoption and neutering fees. Officer Middleton
briefly explained the adoption process and neutering fees.
