Solar Panel Installation
Dear Mr.Corliss: P-
Per your request, we have reviewed the attached documents and photos relating to the installation of solar panels at the above-referenced site. The
following materials and components are proposed in the installation of the solar panels.
Roof structure:2x4 Manufactured Roof Trusses @ 24"O.C.
Roof material:Concrete tile
Mounting connections:(2)5/16"x 3-1/2"lag screws
Based upon our review, it is our conclusion that the installation of solar panels on this existing roof per the attached documents and in accordance
with Suncrest Solaes installation requirements will not adversely affect the structure of this house. The design of supporting members is by the
manufacturer and/or installer. The adopted building code in this jurisdiction is the 2013 edition of the California Building Code which references
ASCE 7-10. The solar panels and attachments have been designed to withstand the parameters listed below:
Design wind speed for risk category 11 structures: 110 mph(3-sec gust)
Wind exposure:Category C
Our conclusion regarding the adequacy of the existing roof is based on the fact that the additional weight of the solar panels is 3 pounds per square
foot or less. In the area of the solar panels, the total additional load is less than 5%of the original load per the attached calculations. In the area of the
solar panels, other live loads will not be present or greatly reduced. Regarding snow loads (if any), it is our conclusion that since the panels are
slippery and dark, effective snow loads will likely be reduced in the areas of the panels. The attached calculations verify the capacity of the
connections against wind, the governing load case.Regarding seismic loads,we conclude that any additional forces will be small. With an assumed
roof dead load of 24 psf, solar panel dead load of 3 psf, and affected roof area of 40%(maximum),the additional dead load (and consequential
seismic load) will be 5.0%. This calculation conservatively neglects the weight of wall dead load. Because the increase is less than 10%, this
alteration meets the requirements of the exception in Section 3404.4 of the 2013 edition of the California Building Code. Thus the existing structure
is permitted to remain unaltered.
Installation of the solar panels must be performed in accordance with Suncrest Solar's installation requirements. Particular attention must be paid to
the maximum allowable spacing of attachments and the location of solar panels relative to roof edges. The use of solar panel support span tables
provided by others is allowed only where the building type, site conditions, site-specific design parameters, and solar panel configuration match the
description of the span tables. Attachments to existing roof joist or rafters must be staggered so as not to overload any existing structural member.
Electrical engineering is beyond our scope. Waterproofing around the roof penetrations is the responsibility of others. All work performed must be
in accordance with accepted industry-wide methods and applicable safety standards. Vector Structural Engineering assumes no responsibility for
improper installation of the solar panels.
Please note a representative of Vector Structural Engineering has not physically observed the roof framing. Our conclusions are based upon the
assumption that all structural roof components and other supporting elements are in good condition, free of damage and deterioration, and are sized
and spaced such that they can resist standard roof loads.

Max.%of Roof w/Panels 40 %
Dead Load from Panels 3 psf
Total Dead Load 25.2 psf(Roof DL+%of roof w/Panels* Panel DL)
Increase in Dead Load 5.0%
Conservatively neglecting the weight of exisisting wall materials, the installation of the solar panels
represents in increase in the the total weight(and resulting seismic load)of 5%. Because the
increase is less than 10%,this alteration meets the requirements of the exception in Section 3404.4
of the California Building Code. Thus the existing structure is permitted to remain unaltered.
WIND: It is our conclusion that any additional MWFRS wind loading related to the addition of the solar
panels is negligible. This conclusion is based on the fact that the panels are installed flush with the
roof and do not extend above the peak of the roof and therefore do not change the projected area
of the structure. In profile, the additional area from the solar panels is minor when compared to
the profile of the entire structure. Therefore the additional wind load,if any,is much less than 10%
and meets the requirements of the exception in Section 3404.4 of the California Building Code.
Thus the existing structure is permitted to remain unaltered.
